Pea (Pisum sativum), also known as garden pea, fresh market or shelling pea, are a member of the Fabaceae family.

The pea plant generally grows upto 50cm, and produce large pods containing 8 peas.

Peas have two very distinct growing seasons, summer and winter. The growing season directly impact the length of time from planting to harvest They can sprout in as little as 6 days however on average they will sprout around 10 days after planting.

The first flower may appear in as early as 40 days or as long as 80 days following planting. The Pea pod will be visible anywhere from 21 days after flowering.

Peas are ready for harvest in around 3 weeks after flowering.

Peas have rounded pods that are usually slightly curved in shape with a smooth texture and vibrant green colour.

Inside the pods are green rounded pea seeds which are sweet and starchy in taste.

Peas are starchy, but high in fibre, protein, vitamins, minerals and lutein. Peas can be shelled and enjoyed raw or cooked a number of ways.
