Beans

Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), also known as the common or garden bean, are a member of the fabaceae family.

There are a number of cultivars (varieties) available for use in the commercial sector.

A commonly grown cultivars is the Hickok. Beans may be machine harvested or at AvaGrow Farms we hand pick all of our beans.

The common bean bush generally grows 20 – 60 cms high, and produce pods (beans) approximately 15-18cm in length.

They can sprout in as little as 5 days however on average they will sprout around 8 days after planting.

Beans will flower in approximately 50 days after sprouting and will develop their pods shortly after.

Beans are ready for harvest in approximately 8 weeks after planting. Beans are relatively straight with a smooth texture and vibrant green colour.

Common Beans are high in starch, fibre and protein, and are an excellent source of iron, potassium, selenium, molybdenum, thiamine, vitaminB6 and folate.

Beans are great in salads, stir-fries, casseroles and vegetable dishes. They can be consumed raw, steamed, boiled or stir-fried.
